Tribute to Lonnie:

Our earthly body is hurting deeply right now, but our Holy Spirit tells us that Lonnie is with Jesus celebrating his new body & legs at this time. I can just imagine him running & jumping so high with a big smile on his face with the newfound freedom to use his new body. When he was a child he always wanted to be athletic to the point that he actually played baseball for a couple of years using a designated runner. As a junior high school student, he became the manager of his school football team. The players respected him enough that they honored him with a lettered school football jacket. Then as a young adult he helped his dad, Tommy, Coach a little league Basketball Team for two years.

Then at his High School Graduation he was determined to stand up as long as he had to and walk across the stage to receive his diploma with the other graduates. His knees were bowing nearly to the floor but he did walk up to receive it. When he was a young child, he attended summer camp at Aldersgate Summer Camp for Kids with Spina Bifida. When he was too old at 14 to attend as a camper, he began volunteering as a Counselor for the other children. He was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for his Volunteer Service by Governor Bill Clinton & invited to receive it in a ceremony at the Governor's Mansion. As a child Lonnie loved to attend church at Archview BC. He adored becoming a Puppeteer in the Puppet Ministry & later becoming an Assistant Puppet Director in that Ministry. He also enjoyed leading a children's ministry group on Sunday Nights for a few years. Lonnie also volunteered to work in Archview's Daycare Center for several years as a young man. As a child Lonnie & his friend, Todd Koper, used to race through the woods on four wheelers & shoot BB guns together. I can't help but believe that they are together again so happy to see each other and Granny & Grampa too. Lonnie had so much spirit even though he faced terrific physical disabilities. As a boy he insisted on becoming a Cub Scout, so I became the Den Mother for his friends. During that time Astronaut Richard Truly visited our Booth at the AR State Fair Grounds Hall of Industry. Lonnie & his dad had worked very hard on an antiqued wooden plaque of the Constitution of the USA together. Lonnie asked if he could give it to the Astronaut. We agreed & Astronaut Truly was very appreciative. He said he had a spot in his den just for that plaque. Lonnie was so happy. A few weeks later a package came in the mail from NASA addressed to Lonnie. It contained six or eight pictures of himself & other Astronauts & Shuttle Missions with a gracious letter of appreciation for the plaque. Lonnie's face just beamed! He was so proud of that gift from the Astronaut. Lonnie always said he wanted to be an Astronaut as a child & as he got older he decided it would be second best if he could join the army. He actually went as far as talking to a recruiting officer when he was 18. As a young adult, Lonnie worked hard to become a 32nd Degree Mason. He served as Grand Master of the Iron Springs Lodge for one year and remained a member for over 20 years. Lonnie was always looking for things he could do to help in the Community. He even volunteered for several years as a dispatcher for Arch Street Fire Department. Lonnie always believed in himself & had a strong spirit & willingness to keep on trying no matter how hard things got. Lonnie worked for Southwestern Bell for six years until his physical disabilities prevented him from being able to do so any longer. He met and married the love of his life, Heather, about six years ago. She made him so happy. Her brother, Noble, was like Lonnie's right arm & his legs as well. They were certainly a blessing to him & he loved them dearly. The last words Lonnie said to me were last Friday over the phone. As we were hanging up, he said, "I love you, Momma." I said, "I love you, too."
That was just Lonnie. In recent years he never failed to tell me he loved me. I will miss him dearly. Rest in peace my sweet, son.
