Al then joined one of his brothers in Santa Monica, CA, where he studied and trained to become a loftsman for Douglas Aircraft Company until 1941. While in California, he played minor league baseball and was offered a contract by the St. Louis Cardinals. He chose, however, to enter the armed forces.
He volunteered in 1942 for the Army Air Corps during World War II and served as a captain in the 556th Army Air Corps Air Supply Group in the Pacific Theatre.

Big Al, as many called him, loved to hunt and play golf. He was a member of the Hardin Point Hunting Club, the Mississippi Delta Seniors Golf Association, the Arkansas Senior Golf Association and served as president of that group.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Helena, AR, and was affiliated with Central United Methodist in Fayetteville the last five years of his life. In Helena, he served on the Board of Trustees, the Finance Committee, and many activities of the church.
In 1944, he married Emma Lee Campbell of Oneida, AR, and they had two children: Durinda Gordon Gammill (Gary) of Hot Springs and Dr. Al Gordon, Jr. (Debby) of Fayetteville. He is also survived by three grandchildren: Lee Gammill McAhren (Camron) of Springdale, Helen Gammill Shirron (Stephen) of Sheridan, and Laine Gordon of Oklahoma City, OK, three great grandchildren: Garrett Pieroni of Springdale, Madison Shirron and Reagan Shirron, both of Sheridan, one sister-in-law: Cassie Brothers of Helena and many nieces and nephews whom he loved and enjoyed.
The order of services are as follows: On Friday, July 31, a private burial service for family only at Maple Hill Cemetery in Helena, AR at 9:00 a.m. with an open memorial service at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Helena, AR. I love every moment of playing golf with Big Al at the Helena Country Club back in the 1960s. He was always a gentleman and a fine man. Maybe my Dad and Big Al are playing the golden fairways today in Heaven.

Dear Emmalee, Al & Debby,
I was so sorry to hear of Al Sr.'s passing. Although I only spoke with him on a couple of occasions, I still could sense what a special man he was. May you be able to temper the sadness of his passing with the absolute truth that he is now with his Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ. Please know that you are in my prayers.

I was so saddened this morning to hear of Al's passing. He was the Patriarch of our family.

How wonderful it was to see him at the Gordon Family Reunion in Forest, Mississippi last October. I'm just so happy that he was there, and shared so much with all of us!
My heart goes out to Tookey, Durinda & Al today. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers throughout this time. I love all of you!
