Guy Borden

of Little Rock, AR

July 3, 2015

Guy passed away in his sleep July 3 at the age of 94. He enjoyed a long, happy life. Born in Fairmont, W VA September 14, 1920 he grew up in San Antonio, Texas where the family had resided for two generations. When asked why he was born in West Virginia, where he had no family history, he responded that he wanted to be close to his mother. The comment was typical of his wit and sense of humor. He was a descendent of Steven F. Austin's ''Old Three Hundred'', the original contingent of settlers in Texas, which was then a part of Mexico. His great grandfather and great-great-grandfather are both memorialized on the San Jacinto monument outside of Houston, Texas. His parents were Guy Borden II and Eunice Rhodes Borden, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Lillian Underwood Borden, sons Guy IV (Lynn) and Clay (Becky) and daughter Merrilee Dietrich (John). He enjoyed the company of his six grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Guy attended the University of Texas, Austin, where he earned a Chemical Engineering degree. A bright spot of his college years was relief from final exams for all seniors who enlisted in the military. He served as a naval officer in WW2, though remained state side due to a war related accident. He stayed active in the Navy Reserves following the war. On his return from active service, he earned a Masters in Chemical Engineering from Michigan. He joined the faculty at Louisiana State University and during summers worked in a petrochemical lab in Tulsa, where he met Lillian. They married in March, 1949 and enjoyed 66 years of marriage. He left academia and pursued a career in industrial process controls, first with BS& B in Tulsa, later with Bechtel in Houston, TX. He finally retired at the age of 71 as a consultant at the Comanche Peak nuclear power plant in Glen Rose, TX. Over his working career he was an active member of the Instrument Society of America, was named Man of the Year and later served as the Houston chapter president. In his retirement, he edited a 700 page monograph for the Society.
Guy is remembered for being even tempered and generally stress free. He loved playing duplicate bridge and cribbage. His luck in cribbage was legendary. He had a passion for truth and honesty in people and as a child of the depression, defined the term 'thrifty'. He did splurge when, after an overseas job assignment, bought a Mercedes Benz automobile at the factory and drove with Lillian around Europe for a few weeks. He loved to travel by car and put several hundred thousand miles on the Mercedes. He was a willing dad/leader in baseball and boy scouts, though he always loved his ''doll'' in a special way. The family and his care providers will miss him for his wit, which he had up to the end.
Memorial services are pending.

I loved my granddad. He taught me many values, truths, and what it means to be a family. As a child I loved going with grandma to have picnic lunches with him on his lunch hour. I enjoyed picking figs, cracking pecans, and helping him with roof repairs. We played many games of cribbage, which yes he won most of time. He taught me quite a bit about our family history. I will forever and always will be grateful, thankful, and I feel truly blessed he was my granddad. I am so sorry for your loss grandma. I have my granddad in my heart and I know he will always watch over me.
