Clarence D. Higgins, Sr., age 95, of Jonesboro, died Saturday, April 28, 2012 at Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House.
He was born August 22, 1916 in Waterloo, Alabama to Comer and Jimmie Louella Humphreys Higgins. Mr. Higgins was a great gardener and farmer. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were the joy of his life. He was a member of the Nettleton Church of Christ.
Mr. Higgins was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Earline Gartman Higgins; great-grandaughter, Sarah Higgins; four brothers, Newt, Clifford, Minford “Pent” and James Higgins; and a sister Lady Maude Shockley.
Mr. Higgins is survived by a son, Clarence (Elizabeth) Higgins, Jr. of Jonesboro; three daughters, Geraline (Edward) South of Jonesboro, Opaline (Sonny) Thompson of Jonesboro and Rebecca (Kenny) Griffin of Atlanta, Georgia; six grandchildren, Dr. Ron (Kelly) South, Gary Neal (Kristen) Higgins, Audra Beth Malone, Dr. Paige (Nic) Lawson, Kathleen (Tyler) Hardin and Jack Griffin; nine great-great-grandchildren, Olivia South, Alexandra South, Peyton South, Emma Higgins, Ellie Higgins, Grant Higgins, Reed Higgins, Spencer Malone and Halle Malone; a brother Marvin (Martha) Higgins of Jonesboro and a sister, Patsy Stephens of Jonesboro.
Funeral services will be Monday at 2:00pm at Roller-Farmers Union, 1900 West Washington with Jimmy Young and Jimmy Ferguson officiating. Burial will follow at Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dr. Ron South, Gary Higgins, Nic Lawson, Jack Griffin, Tyler Hardin and Audra Malone. Honorary pallbearers are Larry “Boots” Rutherford, James Lea, Willie Simpson, Bill Lester, Earl Gunn, Eldon Gartman, James Higgins, Jr., Van Higgins, Joe Counce, Gary Gartman, Sonny Hollis and Frank Brewer.
Visitation will be Sunday from 3:00pm to 5:00pm at the funeral home.
