Mary Lee Jones McCown, 84, of Batesville passed away on Saturday, February 17, 2007 at a hospital in Batesville.

She was born January 19, 1923 in Batesville and was the daughter of Arch Jones and Cecil (McMillan) Jones. She was a graduate of Batesville High School. Mary was a life-long member of the Central Avenue United Methodist Church and a member of the Omega Sunday School Class. She retired after 36 years of service as the office manager for the district office of the Arkansas Highway Department. Before her illness, she was an avid reader and enjoyed all types of books. She often shared her favorite selections with her many friends. Mary also enjoyed playing bridge and at one time was a member of a club that played regularly.

She is survived by a daughter, Martha Dale McCown Altom and her husband, Bobby of Jacksonville; a sister, Emma Lou Hedden and her husband, Donald of Batesville; a sister-in-law, Barbara Jones also of Batesville; one grandchild, Reid Altom and his wife Jamie of Sherwood; and two great-grandchildren, Abigail Lee Altom and Cade Alexander Altom both of Sherwood. Other survivors include many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Edgar McCown, and a brother, Ernest Jones.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday at the Central Avenue United Methodist Church with Reverend Sam Williams officiating.

Pallbearers will be Michael Jones, Arch Jones, Sparky Hedden, Benny Hedden, Terry Hedden and Reid Altom.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

Interment will be at Oaklawn Cemetery under the direction of Roller-Crouch Funeral Home of Batesville (870) 793-4161.

Memorials may be made to the Central Avenue United Methodist Church, 1205 N. Central, Batesville, AR 72501

We were so sad to learn of Mary Lee's death and know that your memories of her will be cherished and shared . She was a good friend and neighbor to Nat these many years. I remember her coming to Nat's visitation in May of 2005. Please know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. Love, Welby and Grier Payne
