of Clinton, AR

August 25, 1908 - January 12, 2007

Robbia Beatrice Jackson Cannaday passed from this life on the 12th day of January, 2007 at, 10:10pm Beatrice Cannaday (known as B. Cannaday) was born August 25, 1908, to Delia A. Jackson and John D. Jackson of Aurora, Arkansas. She was married to Floyd Cannaday April 29, 1933. To this union two children were born, Jeanette Cannaday Tomlinson and DeAnna Sue Cannaday. She was preceded in death by daughter, DeAnna Sue (1951) and her husband, Floyd Cannaday (1953). B. Cannaday is survived by her daughter, Jeanette, and son-in-law, David R. Tomlinson; three grandchildren and their spouses: James David and Susan Tomlinson, Robbia and Jeff Mays; Billy and Claire Tomlinson; nine great grandchildren and three great -great grandchildren (all of whom she adored). She is also survived by one sister, Pauline Thacker of Pettigrew, Arkansas, nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Mrs. Cannaday loved people. She was born on a farm into a family of seven children, who had plenty to eat and to wear, but very little money. She said, "When I was eight years old, if I had a quarter, I thought I was rich; when I was older and had two quarters, it was time to share and to help others". She began early and continued working with people, clerking in a store while going to high school; teaching in her first school at the age of sixteen; she was Deputy County and Probate Clerk of Madison County, Arkansas, Clerk in OP A office during rationing, Assistant Manager in the Navy General Office at Port Hueneme, California during WWII. Returning to Arkansas when the war was over, with family help, she founded, built and managed Cannaday Abstract Company, and was elected to the Position of County and Circuit Clerk of Van Buren County, Arkansas. She worked as a licensed agent and sold property insurance, then worked as a licensed broker and sold real estate until retirement - always working with people. She loved people. Mrs. Cannaday was interested in community affairs. She had a life-time membership in the Fair Association. Even at the age of 98 years, she had items there to exhibit and won three "Best of Show" ribbons. She worked as a volunteer for the Red Cross Blood Drive many years. And, as long as she was able, one of her special loves was visiting the Van Buren County Nursing Home, where she averaged visiting 25 or 30 friends each month. Mrs. Cannaday was instrumental in organizing The Clinton Business and Professional Women's Club, with a charter membership of 45, and she served as its first president. Mrs. Cannaday believes in education. She established The Cannaday Scholarship Fund in memory of her deceased loved ones and honoring her living loved ones with a perpetual, annual scholarship going to two deserving Clinton High School graduates. One club in which she took an active part was The Clinton Extension Homemakers Club. She was recognized as County and as District Homemaker of the year, she served the club in various positions, lastly as Devotional Leader of the Clinton Club and also of the County Organization. Mrs. Cannaday shared "her extra quarter" by furnishing a room at The Ozark Medical Center, and also sponsoring the new wing of seven rooms. She also provided financial support to the Clinton Senior Center, her donation cut the time in half by which the indebtedness could be paid in full.

Mrs. Cannaday loved her church. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Clinton, she taught a Sunday School Class, received two mission pins, a plaque for her help and service to "The Methodist Women's Thrift Store". She served as first chairman of the Esther Whillock Circle, served on various committees and was a member of the Garden View Sunday School Class and The Esther Circle. She said that the contribution to the church by her of which she was most proud was the chimes. Mrs. Cannaday had them installed, and has paid for their upkeep. She said, "Every time I hear the sound, either music or just the time, it is saying, "God is alive, come to our church - you are welcome here. We love you!"

Jeanette and David, Robbia and Jeff, Jamie and Susan, Billy and Claire, and Families: Our thoughts are with all of you at this sad and difficult time. Mrs. Cannaday was truly an amazing person. We always admired her quick wit, can-do attitude, and endless generosity. Even though many years have passed since we last saw her, we can't help but smile as we fondly reminisce about time spent with her. We will always remember Mrs. Cannaday as a caring and inspirational lady who lived life to the fullest, loved her family and friends dearly, gave generously of her time and resources, and genuinely enjoyed a good laugh. May all your special memories keep her forever in your hearts. We love you. Lou Ann, Bob, and Dax

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and to the community in which Mrs. Cannaday was such a positive influence. I remember her as a professional business woman, a significant accomplishment especially for her time, and as a kindhearted person with a gentle spirit and friendly smile. Those of us who crossed paths with Mrs. Canaday and her family were truly blessed.

I don't believe there's a person in Van Buren County and the surrounding area that didn't know Ms. Bea. She was truly loved, admired, and respected by many. This is surely a sad day on earth, but a day of rejoicing in heaven. God Bless you all.
