Sam J. Farmer, 70, of Batesville, passed away on Thursday, April 7, 2011 at White River Medical Center in Batesville. He was a devoted Christian man and his love of God was the main focus of his life which was demonstrated in his love for family, church, and friends. He stayed strong to the very end and was always optimistic. He was born in Ash Flat, Arkansas on Thursday, February 25, 1941 to Sam E. and Mary Watson Farmer and was one of 13 children. He grew up with a strong work ethic that began at an early age, shown by his determination to get any job done right. He enjoyed woodworking and was known to "fix anything but a broken heart and the break of day." He was a retired furniture salesman.
He married Mary Burge on May 3, 1981 and was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Batesville, staying active there until his health began deteriorating.
He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 30 years, Mary, of the home; three sons, Samuel Farmer of the home; Pat Farmer and wife, Tina, of Huffman, Texas and Vernon Farmer and wife, Staci, of Cross Plains, Tennessee; sisters, Wyveda Mabry of Batesville, Dolly Hargis of California, and Sue Roux of Batesville; brothers, Gene Farmer of Batesville, Howard Farmer and wife, Jean, of Batesville, Bill Farmer of Batesville, Bob Farmer and wife, Brenda, of Florida, and Rayburn Farmer and wife, Sheila, of North Carolina; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and loving friends. He touched the lives of many people and we are all better to have known and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Catherine Farmer; brothers Richard Farmer, Johnny Farmer and James Farmer.
Pallbearers will be Russ Amos, Rick Elumbaugh, David Wilkins, Matt Gavin, Hayden Cockrill and Bobby Jobe. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. J. R. Baker, the staff of White River Medical Center especially the Emergency Department, Radiology, and the 4th floor personnel, and members of the First Church of the Nazarene in Batesville.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the First Church of the Nazarene with Bro. Norman Clayton and Bro. Tim Brown officiating.
Burial will be at Oaklawn Cemetery under the direction of Roller-Crouch Funeral Home of Batesville.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to all of you! I am fortunate to have known Sam for such a short while. I am blessed to have gotten to meet him and will NEVER forget him nor do I have the desire to forget. His blood runs through my veins. That connection will always remain true.

Words can not describe how sorry I am for your loss. Sam was such a caring and honest man; a true role model for us all. He will be missed by us all and is in our thoughts an prayers. Very sorry for your lose. Now is the time for You to draw close to God in prayer, because the Bible promises that God will sustain you. Grief is so very hard to deal with but know God knows your pain.
