April 6, 1921 - January 19, 2008

Dr. Robert (Bobbo) P. Carson, M.D., of Little Rock, died on January 19, 2008 at the age of 86. Bobbo was known throughout Arkansas and Ohio for his sense of humor and kindness. He was an avid reader and frequented many restaurants in Little Rock due to his love of good food. Not only was he respected as an exceptional pathologist, but his personal life included countless lifelong friendships. Those close to him treasure his wisdom and guidance. His love and generosity were apparent to all.

Dr. Carson touched many lives as he traveled through life, and will be remembered fondly. He was born in Portsmouth, Ohio in 1921 to Wesley G. Carson and Jennie Jones Carson. He received a BS degree from Olivet College in Olivet, Michigan in 1943 and Medical Degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1946. He had an internship at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn New York and residency and fellowship at Cincinnati General Hospital. He served in the United States Army Medical Corps in the Philippines from 1948-1950. Dr. Carson was the Director of Laboratories at the Holzer Medical Center in Gallipolis, Ohio from 1953-1961 and Director of Laboratories at the Middletown Regional Hospital, Middletown, Ohio from 1961 until he retired from medical practice in 1988. He was active in a number of professional organizations including the Ohio Society of Pathologists (President 1962-1963), the AABB (American Association of Blood Banks), on the Board of Trustees of the Tri-State Regional Blood Center in Huntington, West Virginia and on the Board of Trustees for the Dayton Community Blood Center and Tissue Bank. Also, he was a founding member of the Ohio Association of Blood Banks. Dr. Carson was active in medical/professional education as an Associate Professor of Clinical Pathology at University of Cincinnati College of Medicine from 1961-1973 and the founding Medical Director of the Medical Laboratory Technician School at Middletown Regional Hospital. He moved to Little Rock, Arkansas with his wife, Shirley, in 1999 to join his daughter Leslie and family.

Dr. Carson was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley H. Carson. He is survived by his son, Tom H. Carson, M.D., and partner, O.A. Hernandez, of Metairie, Louisiana; daughter Leslie C. Collins, and husband, Gary J. Collins, M.D. of Little Rock, Arkansas; and son, Kevin R. Carson, and wife, Diane Murdock, of Phoenix, Arizona. He is also survived by grandchildren Claire M. Collins, Laura Ann Collins, of Little Rock, Arkansas, Megan J. Carson and Matthew R. Carson of Phoenix, Arizona and step-grandchildren Craig Murdock and Sarah Murdock of Phoenix, Arizona. He is also survived by special friend and caregiver, Girlene Crain of Little Rock, Arkansas and pet companion, Marlow. The family acknowledges the care provided by Rosa Gentry.

To Leslie and family, your father was a great man and I looked forward to seeing him and Girlene on Fridays when they came to Kroger on Chenal to shop. He always had a smile on his face. May God be with you all at this difficult time. You're in my thoughts and prayers.

I knew Bobbo as a pragmatic, supportive, down to earth man. Every cloud has a silver lining, they say, and during my Katrina evacuation, my silver lining was the time I spent in Bobbo's house. During the one-month stay, Bobbo distracted me with stories and respected my privacy, and understood the emotional state Tom and I were going through. He was gentleman, salty in his observations at times, but usually on target. And yes, he was an avid football and David Letterman fan. My only regret is not having spent visited more often. Bobbo, we'll miss you and thank you for Marlo. To Leslie and Kevin and their respective families, my thoughts are with you. Hope to see you soon, FH Felipe

Leslie and Gary: From an "across the street" view, your father (and mother) were well taken care of, and I'm sure enjoyed life to the fullest. He will be missed as a neighbor even though he hardly knew me. It was comforting to me to know he was there. (My Mom was always interested in the comings and goings across the street as she sat on the front porch). Life changes always and it is still comforting to know you guy are just down the street. With love, Linda

Leslie & Family, My sincere sympathy to you and your family during this time of loss of your Dad. I have such wonderful memories and him and your Mother so graciously having all of us over at your home in Middletown while we were growing up. He certainly touched many lives in a positive way. May God keep you in the palm of his hand during this extremely difficult time. You were so lucky to have them close by in Arkansas with you. You will never forget those days. Dear Tom, Leslie and Kevin, I extend my sympathies to you all on your dad's death. I remember so well his kindness and smiles as we ran around the neighborhood on Alamo. I recall him with a gentle yet to-be-respected tone and always the time to listen to what we had to say. In later years, he would always wave to my mom through the kitchen window early on Saturday mornings as he was picked up to join his friends for breakfast. Memories of a life well-lived will be your strength. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Steve Davies

HOW DO YOU BEGIN? DR. CARSON WAS ONE MY FAVORITE CUSTOMERS. HE WOULD HAVE ME COME TO THE HOUSE AND SHOW ME HOW HE WANTED HIS PLANTERS PLACED AND WITH WHAT FLOWERS HE WANTED THEM PLANTED WITH. I LOOKED FOWARD TO SEEING HIM STOP IN OUR SHOP. WHEN MY YOUNGEST SON BECAME ILL AT 14 DAYS OLD AND WAS IN THE HOSPITAL IT WAS DOC CARSON WHO HELPED ME ASKED THE RIGHT QUESTIONS TO THE DR'S AND THEN GAVE ME ADVICE ON WHAT TO DO NEXT ABOUT EMMANUELS CARE. I STILL BELIEVE IN SOME WAYS HE SAVED HIS LIFE AND I THANK HIM FOR THAT. HOW LUCKY WE WERE TO HAVE SUCH A GREAT MAN SHARE HIS LOVE AND LIFE WITH US EVEN IF IT WERE ONLY FOR 86 YEARS. MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH THE CARSON FAMILY AND MEMORIES OF YOUR FATHER WILL LIVE ON IN MY HEART FOR EVER.....GOD BLESS THE FAITHFULLY DEPARTED...
