James Sherman Villines

of Compton, AR

November 7, 1936 - April 22, 2024

James Sherman Villines, age 87, of Compton, Arkansas went home to be with the Lord on Monday, April 22, 2024 in Harrison. He was born on November 7, 1936 at Centerpoint, Arkansas, on the Buffalo River, the son of the Rev. Arie and Cynthia (Henderson) Villines. Along with his parents, Sherman was preceded in death by his infant brother, Terry Villines; three sisters, Lowetta (Villines) Jackson, Daisy May (Villines) Newberry and Netta Sue (Villines) Stone and his brothers-in-law, Ocalee Gibbins, Jimmy Brickey, Keith Stone and Sarge Newberry.

Sherman married Carolyn Sue Goodall on April 12, 1962 in Ponca, Arkansas, by the Rev. Martin Villines. He was a founding member of the Mountain Springs Full Gospel Church and played guitar and sang in the church for 52 years, as well as keeping up with maintenance and anything that needed to be done around the church. Sherman worked in road construction, logging, tree-trimming, carpentry and farming throughout his life. His work ethic was unmatched. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed camping and cooking with his friends and family. Sherman loved traveling and vacationing with his family, as well as with special friends, Leo and Charlene Davidson and Harold and Kay Shipp. The light of his life was his wife, Sue, of 62 years and their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Carolyn Sue Villines; his brothers, Hillard Villines, Willard Villines, Eddie Villines and Teddie Villines; two sisters, Christine (Villines) Brickey and Ruth (Villines) Newberry; three sons, Utah (Michele) Villines, Rev. Justin (Becky) Villines and Bo (Karla) Villines; five grandchildren, Rev. Trent (Brittney) Villines, Clint (Jamie) Villines, Landon Villines, Emily (Andrew) Smith and Hannah Villines (Brady Willis); six great-grandchildren and a host of family and friends.

We met Sherman in 1999 after the ice storm. What a worker he was. Then in 2009 after the second ice storm, Sherman and his crew were back again. What special memories we have. Days of hard labor developed into a lasting friendship.

We will continue to keep all of the family in our prayers. May God give you strength and comfort in the days ahead.

We are very sorry for your loss. I remember many times singing with him and grandma Charlene at church. He watched me grow up and always made sure I stayed on the right path. I know he is rejoicing and singing with the angels and walking and talking with grandpa Leo about logging and everything else. He will be deeply missed but we can take comfort in knowing that he made it where he always talked about and someday we will all be reunited.
